What is public and what is private
Promisd collects as little as it can. Here is exactly what happens to what you send.
Public, after review
If your owner report is approved, these details appear in the public ledger: trim, how you bought it, your reservation and order dates, the ship window you were quoted, current state, shipped and delivered dates, region, condition on arrival, the text you wrote under problems and notes, and whether the report is verified or self-reported.
Your account
- To add a report you sign in with Google. We ask for this so each owner has one account and one report per bike, which keeps the numbers honest, and so you can come back and update your report later.
- Your email address is stored privately with your account. It is never shown on the site, and it is not attached to your public report. Our sign-in service also keeps the basic profile Google shares when you sign in (your name and a link to your profile picture). We do not use or show it.
- We use your email only to run your account and to spot duplicate reports. We do not send newsletters and we do not share it with anyone, including the companies we cover.
- Our editors can see which account sent a report, so they can check for duplicates.
Verifying with your email
If you verify your report by uploading the original email from the company, here is what happens to it.
- What we read: the email's digital signature, the sender, the address it was sent to, the subject, the date, and the order summary.
- What we keep: the kind of email (reservation, order or shipping confirmation), the date it was sent, your trim and the ship window you were quoted if the email shows them, which company domain and key signed it, a short piece of the signature as a receipt, and a one-way fingerprint of the order number so the same order cannot back two accounts.
- Your order number, kept privately: for a verified reservation or order confirmation we also keep the order number itself. Only our editors can see it, and it is never shown on the site. We use it to check whether self-reported order numbers fit their dates and to estimate how many orders the company is taking (those estimates are private too). It is deleted when you delete your report or your account.
- What we discard: the file itself, your email address and name as written in the email, payment details, prices and your shipping address. The file is checked in memory and is never saved to disk, to our database or to our logs.
- What becomes public: only that your report is verified, plus the order date, trim and quoted ship window (or shipped date) that the email filled in, after review, like any other report.
- The check happens once, when you upload. Deleting your report or your account deletes its verification records too.
Private, never shown
- Your account email. Used only for your account and to spot duplicates, as above.
- Order number (optional). Used to prevent duplicate reports and, for editors only, to check that it fits the order date you gave.
- Older edit links. Reports sent before accounts existed came with a private edit link. We store only a one-way fingerprint of it, so we cannot see or resend it. Those links still work.
- Your connection. We store a one-way fingerprint of your IP address to limit how many forms can be sent. We do not store the address itself.
- Correction requests, including any name, email and affiliation you give. These are read by the editors only.
- Reviewer notes written by our moderators.
- Email verification records. The facts kept from an uploaded email, listed above. Editors can see the kind of email, when it was checked and which domain signed it. The order number from a verified email is kept privately for editors only, never shown on the site and never written to our logs.
The database enforces this: the public read key cannot read private columns, account details or correction requests at all.
Deleting your report or account
- Sign in and open Your reports. Each report has a delete button. It is removed right away, private details included.
- On the same page, "Delete my account and reports" removes every report you sent and then your account and email.
- Sent a report with an older edit link? Open the link and use "Delete my entry". Lost it? Send a correction request with your region and order date and we will remove it.
